English Language Parts of Speech

 

1. Verb - action word

Examples: talk, write, jump, do, will, may . . .

 

2. Noun - person, place, thing or idea

Examples: dog, ocean, moon, concept, truth . . .

 

3. Pronoun - takes the place of a noun

Examples: you, me, him, she . . .

 

4. Adjective - describes an noun or pronoun

Examples: green, big, nice, loud, ten . . .

 

5. Adverb - describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb

Examples: quickly, enormous, very, so, well . . .

 

6. Preposition - shows the relationship between its object and another word

Examples: in, near, beside, through, above . . .

 

7. Conjunction - connecting word

Examples: and, but, or, nor, for, yet

 

8. Interjection - expresses sudden feeling

Examples: wow, ouch, my, oh, alas . . .
